Something to get you in the mood for some social activism...
Hear the body image activist Sharon Haywood telling the story about how her Any Body team worked through a campaign (centred on a Twitter Party) to put pressure on Facebook to remove ‘I feel fat’ and ‘I feel ugly’ from their platform. Success!
Most people see things in their travels through the virtual and real worlds which they are unhappy about but that they never actively question. Why are some people motivated to create powerful campaigns and mobilise corporations to support their arguments, when others turn away and ignore it.

Welcome to the live blog for #ESRC7. @FiSpotswood is introducing
proceedings.
21/06/2016 12:05
@joinson is now introducing Sabine Trepte, our first speaker. #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:07
Sabine: Four scenarios of Privacy Behaviour Change. Longitudinal
studies in privacy behaviour change
#ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:08
Market research - people are very concerned about their online
privacy, but don't always act on those concerns #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:10
Scenario 1: do negative experiences influence particular privacy
behaviours? #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:11
If you receive a hostile message on FB, then half a year later would
you be more or less likely to share your information? #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:12
Negative experiences influenced subsequent informational privacy
behaviour #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:13
Scenario 2: in a longitudinal study, participants answered 3
questionnaires in the course of one year #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:14
Questions here were more positive and were about how often people
received social support #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:15
Self disclosure and social support are strongly connected. The more
you disclose, the more support you tend to get online #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:16
In 'real life' people see that others need help - they don't
necessarily have to disclose it to get social support #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:18
@Ruba_AbuSalma welcome! We hope you enjoy the seminar. #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:20
3) technical aspects of legislation 4) protection strategies #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:20
Developed the online privacy literacy scale. 4 dimensions: 1) how
people know about institutional practices 2) knowledge of laws
21/06/2016 12:26
Scenario 4: can we teach people how to understand online privacy?
#ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:27
Informational privacy was affected by privacy tutorials #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:29
Maybe we need positive privacy? Privacy tends to have negative
implications. Maybe it could be a positive experience? #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:31
Alessandro Acquisti is speaking now about Privacy Nudges #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:31
Sabine concludes her talk - thank you Sabine #ESRC7

21/06/2016 12:33
Online privacy decision making nudging is hard. Can privacy nudges
help? #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:34
Study 1. Things people regret doing on FB #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:35
What do people regret sharing on FB and why do they post things they
later regret? #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:36
Simply not thinking about it in the heat of the moment: you are
excited or angry and don't think about the consequences #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:36
Strong majority of participants did regret having posted something on
FB, usually related to sex or profanities #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:38
Similar study about Twitter regrets #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:39
What states lead to regret? How quickly did you regret it? Large
scale online survey #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:40
Compared regrets in face to face conversations with regrets on
Twitter. Classified different types of regret #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:41
14% of Twitter participants reported regretting expressive content
#ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:42
On Twitter you can delete, in real life you say sorry. More people
reported deleting tweets than they do saying sorry #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:43
Do people want to change the things they do online? #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:43
Easier to delete a tweet and pretend it didn't happen than say sorry
face to face #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:45
Is there something you would like to change regarding your behaviour
on social media services? Not a negative question #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:46
People wanted to get more attention or to cultivate their personal
brand #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:46
Interestingly found that 23% wanted to post more #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:47
31% did want to use social media less, usually for time-related
reasons or because they were receiving negative emotions #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:49
So how do we help people achieve these goals? Can we modify the FB
interface to do this? Developed Chrome add on for FB #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:51
Saw no change initially, but then introduced nudges. E.g. Delaying
posts with a timer to delay disclosure #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:53
Another nudge would randomly pick 5 random friends to post statuses
to. Makes you realise specifically who will see the post #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:57
Angela Sasse is now taking the stage. Lessons from the Security
Awareness Trainwreck #ESRC7
21/06/2016 12:57
Alessandro wrapping up his fascinating talk on nudges in privacy
behaviour #ESRC7 https://t.co/wviQYn7swS
21/06/2016 13:03
People should be protecting themselves better, and there are a lot of
campaigns trying to achieve this, eg Google Good to Know #ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:04
Problem is there is so much confusion, they are not thinking about
how this arrives in mailboxes. Recent one got flagged as spam #ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:05
Also, we don't want to scare people off doing stuff online completely
#ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:07
Some resources really not helpful - e.g. Citizens Advice Bureau has a
dead link...puts you off finding good advice #ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:10
Is security education working? ISF report 2014 - people are doing
security awareness in organisations but not changing behaviour #ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:12
Phishing training: companies catching own employees out by
fabricating phishing emails. Doesn't show trust in organisations #ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:14
Awareness is only the first step in changing behaviour #ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:14
In study same people who clicked on a phishing email once did so
again and again - not changing behaviour. Need to engage! #ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:18
Need to get people to do things automatically and learn new
behaviours online so they don't even have to think about it #ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:20
This is the opposite of a 'quick fix' - will take time and effort
https://t.co/0cHJdwVGxW #ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:21
That concludes Angela's talk. Q&A now starting #ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:24
You need to tackle stuff through design, not telling people off -
Angela #ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:30
Fearful of nudges when they are suggested as a complete alternative
to other interventions, but they have their place - Alesaandro #ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:33
Q: will behaviours learnt at work transfer to behaviour at home?
#ESRC7
21/06/2016 13:43
Now we break for tea and coffee. Back at 15:10 #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:13
@joinson is restarting the seminar by discussing individual state,
trait and contextual factors in security behaviours #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:14
Individual Susceptibility in Differences to Influence Techniques
(IDSIT) project #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:16
Understanding malevolent influence techniques. Big literature review
conducted, working with organisations re: phishing attacks #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:18
Older people are particularly susceptible to influence techniques
#ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:19
Scams rely on more traditional social psychological and marketing
techniques such as reciprocity, emotional, urgency #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:20
Are some people more susceptible than others? If so, why? #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:21
People who work in hierarchical organisations are more likely to
succumb to influence techniques #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:22
Levels of awareness and tendency to trust, sensation seeking,
perception of risk all factors in influence techniques #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:24
When people are tired they are more easily influenced - these are
state-based fluid factors #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:25
Context also a factor. Different attacks exist for different types of
organisation #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:26
Can we identify the interaction between all of these different
factors within these social engineering techniques? #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:27
Trying to unpick different types of influence to look at ways to
protect people #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:34
Experimental studies. 1) interruptions in the form of security pop
ups. Some pop ups legitimate, others not #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:39
@joinson concludes his talk and makes way for Debi Ashenden #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:40
Applying social marketing to cyber security #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:43
Social marketing is often used in clearly defined behaviour change
problems. Cyber security is a very complex problem #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:46
Poor security culture, poor communication and a lack of awareness all
contribute to the insider threat #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:47
Could we try and improve the relationship between security
practitioners and the rest of the business? #ESRC7
21/06/2016 14:57
If people aren't following Drs advice when their lives are a stake,
why do security practitioners expect people to follow theirs? #ESRC7
21/06/2016 15:05
Changing behaviour: security practitioners looked at different ways
of changing behaviour: hug, smack, shove or nudge? #ESRC7
21/06/2016 15:08
Thanks to Debi who has now concluded her talk. Ian Brown is now
taking the floor and talking about privacy market failures #ESRC7
21/06/2016 15:13
Market failures come from market asymmetry #esrc7
21/06/2016 15:16
Most individuals are bad at weighing up immediate benefits versus
deferred uncertain cost decisions #esrc7
21/06/2016 15:27

That's it, all the speakers are done and we're into the last Q&A
session #esrc7
21/06/2016 15:49
@joinson as with all of these seminars, the battle of individual
responsibility vs infrastructure comes up again and again #esrc7
21/06/2016 15:50
We've got to have an understanding of the whole piece, not just one
part of it #esrc7
21/06/2016 16:00
And that's it! Thanks to all who came today. Safe journey home #esrc7
